Day Two: Statistics for Advocacy
Libraries need numbers, statistics and evidence to advocate and lobby for resources. Statistics are a vital issue for library associations and libraries who want to influence political processes.
Track The Traffic (TTT)
Is an instrument for studying user behavior in libraries and in other public spaces. It is based on tours of observation through the public areas of the library. The observers follow a fixed route and note down what the users are doing as they pass them. Activities easy to observe are recorded: is the user sitting or standing? Is he/she alone or in a group? Is he/she engaged with digital or printed media (or no media at all), etc. The tours are repeated at regular intervals throughout the day and week. This means that the universe of behavior is sampled rather than continuously observed.
Today we shall conduct observation tours in MUBS library.

Am so grateful to madam Agnes for having introduced me to the TTT as an observation guide, actually in our Library we only had manual statistical methods using the counter books where our students sign when borrowing information materials.But now have learnt using the TTT method which covers almost all activities in the Library.Sincerely have loved the session.

Evidence-based librarianship. We need to explore
TTT will help us as librarians to advocate for improvement of resources and working conditions in our libraries since it is a great tool for evaluating the services which our libraries provide to the users. It also helps us librarians to keep update about the trends of our users in the library.

I love the idea of sharing statistics with all stakeholders as a way of inspiring usage and winning over more support. Library champions would be instrumental in advancing the library agenda drawing talking points from a well conducted study based on a test the traffic tool. Bravo Agnes, CUUL and Latina.
Librarians need to proactively advocate for improved library services. The idea of identifying champions is crucial.
